Mount Meru is a striking volcanic mountain located in northern Tanzania, within Arusha National Park, about 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It stands at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), making it Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and the fifth-highest in Africa.
Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano that last erupted in the early 20th century. Its dramatic shape, steep ridges, and horseshoe-shaped crater were formed by a massive volcanic explosion that destroyed part of the eastern flank. This open crater provides stunning views into the inner walls and ash cone, while also offering panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the summit.
The mountain is known for its rich biodiversity, especially in the lower slopes covered in lush montane forests. Hikers often encounter giraffes, buffaloes, bushbucks, monkeys, and many bird species along the trail. The climb passes through different vegetation zones, from forests and moorlands to alpine desert, culminating at the summit: Socialist Peak.
Climbing Mount Meru is a rewarding trek that usually takes 3 to 4 days, with an overnight stay in mountain huts. Though less famous than Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a less crowded, scenic, and challenging climb — and is often used as a preparation trek for Kilimanjaro due to its altitude and terrain.
